TEAM BUILDING “It was different. It made you think of how you were going to accomplish the goals with the tools and instructions you were given. The horses also had personalities that had to be figured out. These animals could not communicate by speaking to us, and we could not communicate with them by speaking to them. The importance of communication between team members is paramount in getting a task done with the desired results. “
“I just liked being with the horses. Horses are amazing animals and they are beautiful. I liked being in a different setting for our beam building session. It changes how you act and how you handle different situations. We had to depend on each other to get the horses to do what we would like them to do. A lot of the things we tried to get the horses in line didn’t work. So we ended up changing the strategy, and most of the time it worked. Nobody’s idea was ‘laughed at,’ although there were some ‘funny’ moments.”
“I think it pulled us closer as a team.”
“I liked working with the leadership team in an area that was basically unfamiliar to the rest of the leadership group. I enjoyed the examples of the horses’ needs and behaviors being similar to those of employees. It gives a different perspective.”
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT “I liked the team work part, especially when individuals tried to corral a horse. It was a challenge trying to corral a horse. I believe when you go through this workshop you not only learn about people behavior. You actually learn what type of leader you are.”
“Great activities that helped point out skills/information that was applicable to the work environment. Very helpful!!!”
“I thank you for this experience. I am taking away the “Wow factor” because this was something that had been showing up in my life and making me unhappy, and I just kept ignoring it. It was important to show me it was the one thing that was keeping me from the world I wanted to create. “
“I came here with questions; but the one question that was answered was the one I was hiding from and didn’t know how to go about acing or working on. I know this is the one that will change every avenue in my life to make me happier, as well as the people I have relationships with and people I come in contact with.”
“I think it brought out the inner child in all of us. I saw inhibitions cast aside. Everyone tried to do a good job. It was not too physical.”
“Gayla, this week’s team-building sessions were a big hit with the Ocotillo employees. I expected nothing less, but I was also surprised at the process. It came out as you expected, but we did not know that going into each task. At the time I thought the instructions could have been better, but I now know why they were not specific. It was the only way you could allow us to think for ourselves and arrive at a solution. As always you are smart as a fox! I have enjoyed our time together and I am looking forward to our next session, perhaps in the fall. “Bottom line: It was one of the best experiences I have had in many years. I am grateful for you and your team for allowing us to be part of this program.” -- Allan Schultz, Shift Supervisor, Ocotillo Power Plant
WHAT CLIENTS LIKED BEST ABOUT THE RRA EXPERIENCE The personalities of the horses and how they mirror attitudes and behaviors of we five-fingered beings — The continual pull back to “how is this like back at work” and “how can this be applied” — The horses — The workshop in general is a good concept — All the good fun — Interacting with the horses — Getting to observe their personalities with each other – How they cooperate or decline to cooperate with people during the exercises — Fresh air, horses, food, dirt — Being outside with the horses — I enjoyed being around the horses. They really do act like human beings — The interaction with the horses and learning from them.
